Arkansas Association of Mathematics Leaders
The Arkansas Association of Mathematics Leaders formed to assist in promoting effectiveness in leadership, coaching, coordination, and the teaching of mathematics at all levels by holding meetings for the presentation and discussion of papers; by conducting public discussion groups, forums, panels, lectures, or other similar programs; by conducting or promoting investigations for the purpose of improving the teaching of mathematics; and by the sharing of papers, journals, books, and reports; thus vitalizing and coordinating the work of mathematics leaders across Arkansas and bringing the interests of mathematics to the attention and consideration of the larger community in Arkansas.

Meet our candidates for the current elections:
For Vice-President: Karl Romain and Patricia Goodman
|
Karl-Henry Romain has been an educator for over 18 years. He currently trains teachers and administrators on the nuances of the content, pedagogy and instructional strategies of teaching and learning. His area of expertise is on the seamless integration of technology into the taught curriculum. He has designed and taught various professional learning modules regarding analyzing student work and connecting it to the lesson that was taught and what will be taught; how to unwrap and make sense of the various mathematics learning trajectories; on aligning the pedagogy to the mathematics content being taught, and how to create differentiated lessons to meet the needs of all learners. |
|
Patricia Goodman has been in the field of education for over 25 years, with work experiences in both private and public schools in Arkansas, as well as a DoDEA school (Halvorsen Elementary) located on Rhein Main AFB in Germany. She is a native of Newport, Rhode Island, and a proud graduate of Caddo Hills High School in Norman, Arkansas where she had four years of high school math with an incredible math teacher, Mrs. Hazel Lokey. Patricia began college as a math major with a minor in music, and ultimately graduated with a degree in music (piano). After several years of teaching K-12 music she felt the call of the general education classroom, and over the years had the opportunity to teach 5th grade and middle school math, and to work with K-5 students in a math lab setting. In addition to classroom teaching, Patricia has many diverse school work experiences from which she draws insight. These roles include substitute teacher, paraprofessional, math facilitator, school improvement specialist, and her current role as the Little Rock School District Math Lead Teacher for K-5. In this role she advocates for teachers to have the opportunity to gain knowledge about how children develop an understanding of math, and to improve their math content knowledge to better support their students in doing so. She and the district math facilitators, in partnership with district teacher-leaders, develop and curate curriculum resources and regularly provide professional development to support the efforts of teachers throughout the twenty-eight elementary schools in the district. |
...and for Membership/Treasurer: Jackie Starks and Tahnya Price
|
Jackie Starks has completed 14 years in education. She served five years as an Math Instructional Facilitator at Searcy McRae Elementary and is passionate about integrating STEM and mathematics in an elementary school setting. Currently, Mrs. Starks is employed at Westside Elementary School as an Assistant Principal where she continues to support her school, district, and community in efforts to challenge students, supporting teachers, and advocate for change in mathematics education. |
|
Tahnya Price has been an educator for 24 years. She began her career as a math teacher at Westside High School, where she returned after time at Ridgefield Christian and Nettleton High School, to end a 13 year career at Westside. She currently serves as the Mathematics Education Specialist for the Rural STEM Education Center at Arkansas State University. She
works with teachers from all grade levels to bring thoughtful lessons, STEM curriculum, and best practices to the classrooms she serves. Her educational goals are to increase STEM
education, to improve instruction in the classroom for both student and adult learners, and to help teachers implement research-based instruction in the classroom.
