2017 Elections

President - Karl Romain and Javier Taylor:

Karl-Henry Romain has been an educator for over 20 years. He currently trains teachers and administrators on the nuances of the content, pedagogy and instructional strategies of teaching and learning. His area of expertise is on the seamless integration of technology into the taught curriculum. He has designed and taught various professional learning modules regarding analyzing student work and connecting it to the lesson that was taught and what will be taught; how to unwrap and make sense of the various mathematics learning trajectories; on aligning the pedagogy to the mathematics content being taught, and how to create differentiated lessons to meet the needs of all learners.

During his teaching career, Karl has taught a variety of mathematics courses at the secondary level.  He initiated and taught the first AP computer science course in his district. Karl was part of the leadership team that spearheaded the implementation and annual evaluation of his district’s math curriculum and curriculum maps. He was also the project director of a Math Science Partnership grant where he coordinated the implementation of the grant and also co-taught the content with university professors.

Karl-Henry Romain holds a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Xavier University in New Orleans and a Masters in Secondary Math Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He continues his education with advanced studies at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro with a concentration in curriculum.

Javier Taylor was born in Fayetteville, AR and is a graduate of Farmington high school.  While serving in the United States Air Force, Javier received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biblical Studies from Bethany Bible College, later he received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Thomas A. Edison State University as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Arkanasas at Monticello.  Javier worked as a technical writer and curriculum developer for the Air Force before serving as chairman of the mathematics department at Canyon Creek Christian Academy in Richardson, TX.  When Javier and his wife Crystal moved back to Arkansas in 2004, Javier worked at the plastics testing lab of Dalton King Packaging in Russellville, AR.  Javier taught high school mathematics at Pottsville, high school, then served for four years as a state mathematics specialist at the STEM center at Arkansas Tech University and three years as a state mathematics specialist at the Western Arkansas Education Service Cooperative in Branch, AR.  Javier is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice of Mathematics Education at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, AR

Secretary - Angie Jennings and Leah Stinnett

Angie Jennings was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas and has been in the Fort Smith Area her entire life. Starting at a young age, she set up classrooms in her home and taught her “students” math, which happened to be her younger brothers. She continued to pursue her passion of teaching by earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education from Arkansas Tech University. Certified to teach 7th-12th grade Mathematics, she began her career at Alma High School, followed by a short stint at home to stay with her babies. She then returned to teaching in her hometown at Cedarville High School. During her time at Cedarville, she earned her Master’s Degree in Library Media from the University of Central Arkansas, which gives her a unique opportunity to apply cross curricular concepts as well as technology to her skill set. Currently, she is a state math specialist at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith STEM Education Center. Mrs. Jennings loves to work with area teachers and school districts as they work to build the best possible educational opportunities for our students. She has presented multiple times at the Arkansas Curriculum Conference and organizes many grant trainings and programs held on the campus at UAFS. Her primary focus is to encourage teachers to learn, grow, and develop while using research-based teaching strategies and giving their students the opportunity to develop deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Currently I am a K-12 Math Specialist at South Central Service Educational Cooperative in Camden, Arkansas.  I have been working in that capacity for 4 years.  Previously, I worked at Harmony Grove School District (Ouachita County) for 15 years.  I taught MS/HS Mathematics and Science.  At a small school teachers wear many hats.  Among the courses I taught are Physical Science, Biology, Physics, Eighth Grade Algebra, Algebra II, Advanced Placement Statistics and Advanced Placement Calculus AB.  While in the classroom, for a time I served as the Lead Science Teacher at my district.

In addition, I have served as the Secretary for ACTM since January of 2015.  An article I wrote has been published in the ACTM Journal; however, I feel that the more important goal is to give teachers a voice through that publication.  Classroom teachers are encouraged to submit articles as much possible.  In my capacity as a Regional Representative for AAML, I have coordinated the newsletters for the past year.  I have been a contributing member to committee work at the middle school and high school level during my tenure as a Math Specialist.
